What is the Kensington Community Food Co-op (KCFC)?
The KCFC is a group of residents of greater Kensington who are working to inspire cooperation among the residents of this community, to provide access to affordable high quality food, and to promote healthy environmental practices. Our primary goal is to open a member-owned cooperative grocery store that will be operated and maintained by its members.

What is a cooperative grocery store?
A cooperative is an organization that takes the idea of working together and puts it into a business structure. A member owned food co-op is a grocery store owned and controlled by the people who use it—its members. (KCFC will be open to anyone who wants to shop at the co-op whether they are members or not.)

What are the benefits of becoming a member?
As a member, you own a share of a local business. You have a say in the variety of products offered at the store and how it is run. Members often receive discounts and certain benefits (predetermined) on store purchases, as well as other benefits such as yearly rebates based the profits made by the store.

How can I become a member?
All members invest a predetermined amount, payable in one lump sum or in installments. A single membership and its benefits apply to everyone in your household. KCFC Memberships are active upon receipt of membership application and partial payment. Each membership household is allowed a vote in all decisions where votes are required. A member will remain active as long as he or she is in good standing.

How would the KCFC benefit our community?
A food co-op will benefit our neighborhood by bringing healthy quality food and products at an affordable price for all of our residents. A percentage of the co-op’s profits go back into the community. Food co-ops tend to attract and promote supplemental and like minded businesses, as well as community activities, such as farming, picnics, classes and workshops on health and nutrition, and educational activities for youth. We are committed to this broad, overarching positive influence that co-ops create.

Where will KCFC be located?
Although the exact location has yet to be determined, KCFC will be located within the area bounded by Lehigh Avenue to the north, Girard Avenue to the south, Delaware Avenue to the east, and American Street to the west.
